Response to Intervention
The school I completed my student teaching internship with implemented Response to Intervention while I was there. The second grade team collaborated often about how this would be accomplished. We decided to separate the second graders into groups based on specific skills. We were primarily focusing on Tier I and II learners, while support staff was working with Tier III students. Then each teacher would work with one group of students. The groups were created based on a specific concept or task and students were shuffled every couple of days depending on their individual needs. The consistent movement among students and their groups minimized a “high group” or “low group” stigma.

Most of our RTI focus was in math. Students were assessed on first grade GLCEs and RTI was a time to create mastery among all students with the first grade materials. Depending on the students' needs, we would reteach second grade math units during RTI to give each student more time to process and learn current math concepts. Then students would retake a different form of the assessment. In both pictures, the student is learning strategies that can help with visualizing multiplication. |
